What brand and type of SLR camera is best for a new photography student?

It must have a lens that I can adjust myself, according to the cl syllabus. I have been looking at Canon Rebel TS1 and TS2, but am not sure how much money I want to spend since this is a brand new endeavor for me. This is a life-long dream for me to take this cl, as I have always wanted to do landscape photography. One friend recommends a Nikon, another free-lance photographer said to get the new TS1 with zoom lens and extra battery if I was going to want one that I can add to later. I don't need the HD video on it. What is easy to learn on, and will give me high definition and high quality photos? I have very small hands, so what would be light and easy to hold? I don't want to spend over 700.00. Where is the best place to go to get one? Thanks!
