I'm a J1 visa holder. My wife is an unemployed US citizen. We are filing jointly. Do I still get rebates?

My wife and I are filing jointly. We live in NY. I have heard that J1 visa holders receive good rebates. Is this true and if so how do I get them? Should we be filing jointly? Do we need an accountant or can we do this ourselves? Thanks for your advice!
